The unemployment rate was 4.1% in August 2026. The Federal Reserve is charged with both stable prices and maximum employment, and when the two point in opposite directions this is usually the one that decides the next move.

From the Bureau of Labor Statistics household survey, which asks people whether they are working and whether they are looking. Somebody who has stopped looking is not counted as unemployed, so the rate can fall because people gave up. There is no October 2025 reading: the shutdown stopped the survey, and an unasked question has no answer to publish.
