The Alphabet story

Alphabet runs Google's advertising and cloud businesses, with the central question whether Search and enterprise AI can generate enough cash to support its expanding compute infrastructure.

The story in brief

  • Cloud gains weight. Google Cloud revenue grew 82% to $24.8 billion in the quarter to June 2026, while operating profit reached $8.8 billion.
  • Spending outruns cash. Alphabet spent $44.9 billion on plant and equipment in the quarter to June 2026, exceeding operating cash flow of $39.1 billion.
  • Gains inflate earnings. The quarter to June 2026 included $98.0 billion of net other income, primarily unrealized equity gains, making earnings growth a different measure from operating progress.

What drives the business

  • Alphabet's foundation is advertising across Search, YouTube and Google Network properties, alongside Android and other widely used platforms, while its strategy since 2016 has centered on AI across infrastructure, models and products.
  • Google Services generated $94.5 billion of revenue in the quarter to June 2026, representing 79% of Alphabet's revenue, with Google Search & other growing 17% and YouTube ads growing 13%.
  • Google Cloud earns consumption fees and subscriptions through Google Cloud Platform and Workspace, plus revenue from TPU systems, with enterprise AI infrastructure, AI solutions and core cloud services driving its acceleration in the quarter to June 2026.
  • Alphabet reported in July 2026 that nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 used Gemini Enterprise and the Gemini App reached 950 million monthly active users, while Other Bets includes businesses such as Waymo and Isomorphic Labs.
  • The infrastructure expansion also reshapes financing: Alphabet announced a $10 billion private placement agreement with Berkshire Hathaway in June 2026 and reported $49.6 billion of aggregate net proceeds from equity offerings in that month.

What the price assumes

At $342.75, the reverse DCF implies free cash flow after stock pay growing 36.9% a year for ten years, using a 10.2% discount rate.

That compares with 18.1% annual growth over the last 10 years and the TenQ check's 11.0% bar, which slows the historical record halfway toward 4%.

The 17.2x earnings multiple sits alongside a 1.3% free cash flow yield, below the 3.0% TenQ threshold, with reported earnings boosted by investment gains.

What could change the story

  • Infrastructure spending exceeding operating cash flow increases the importance of capital access, and Alphabet raised $20.3 billion through senior unsecured notes in the quarter to June 2026.
  • Cash and short-term investments of $242.5 billion exceed total debt of $100.2 billion, but the debt trend fails TenQ's check and Alphabet identifies increased indebtedness as a possible constraint on investment.
  • The $40.0 billion at-the-market equity program and mandatory preferred stock conversions create dilution risk, although no shares had been issued under that program as of June 2026.
  • Over the last twelve months, free cash flow was $53.3 billion against stock-based pay of $28.2 billion, while TenQ's cash conversion check failed at 0.76 against a 0.80 bar.
  • Evolving privacy, information protection and AI regulations could bring compliance costs, investigations, fines or required changes to business practices.

What to watch next

  • The July 2026 earnings release gave no financial guidance, leaving the next comparison between infrastructure spending and operating cash flow central to assessing funding needs.
  • Cloud revenue and operating profit, alongside Search growth, will show whether enterprise AI demand and the advertising business continue supporting the infrastructure expansion.
  • Further equity program disclosures will show how much issuance funds employee equity tax obligations, the program's stated primary purpose, and how share count changes.
  • Operating income and free cash flow will distinguish business performance from the investment gains that lifted reported earnings in the quarter to June 2026.
