The CarMax story
What drives CarMax, what its price assumes and what could change the story, written from its own filings.
- Volume carries the recovery. In the quarter to August 2026, combined retail and wholesale unit sales rose 14.7%, but pricing actions reduced retail gross profit per unit by $111.
- Financing adds complexity. CAF income rose 32.1% in the quarter to August 2026, helped by a lower loss provision and a loan-sale gain as lending expanded into Tier 2.
- Costs meet capital returns. CarMax plans $200 million in exit rate SG&A savings by the end of fiscal 2027 and a modest resumption of share repurchases in the third fiscal quarter.
