The Novavax story

Novavax is a vaccine developer shifting toward licensing its Matrix-M technology, with the question of whether Sanofi royalties and partner demand can support a smaller operating base.

The story in brief

  • Product demand improved. In the quarter to June 2026, product sales rose 76% to $19 million, but total revenue fell 76% to $57 million against a comparison boosted by milestone payments.
  • Commercial costs declined. In the quarter to June 2026, SG&A expenses declined 39% to $27 million as Novavax transferred lead commercial activities to Sanofi and reduced its administrative costs.
  • Sanofi timing matters. Initiation of Sanofi's Phase 3 COVID-19 and influenza combination trial in the U.S. or European Union would trigger a $125 million payment, but regulatory discussions on timing remained underway in August 2026.

What drives the business

  • Novavax's strategy centers on licensing its protein-based vaccine technology and Matrix-M immune-boosting adjuvant, with Sanofi leading Nuvaxovid commercialization while Novavax retains certain existing supply commitments.
  • The Sanofi agreement makes Novavax eligible for royalties in the high teens to low twenties percent on Nuvaxovid and licensed combination vaccine sales, alongside development, manufacturing transfer and launch milestones.
  • The January 2026 Pfizer agreement licenses Matrix-M for up to two infectious disease areas, with a $30 million upfront payment, potential development and sales milestones of up to $500 million, and royalties.
  • Serum Institute of India manufactures the University of Oxford's R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine, available in 24 countries as of February 2026, and pays Novavax for adjuvant supplies and royalties.
  • Takeda licenses the COVID-19 vaccine in Japan and purchases Matrix-M, with the amended agreement providing royalties in the mid to high-teen percentages rather than a share of operating profits.

What the price assumes

At $11.37, the reverse DCF cannot measure an implied growth rate because free cash flow and operating earnings are both negative, leaving the price dependent on future profits.

Novavax generated $414 million in revenue over the last twelve months, with revenue growth of -61.6% and free cash flow of -$42 million.

Its 4.5x price to sales exceeds the TenQ check's bar of under 2.5x, although its sales valuation is lower than its own history.

What could change the story

  • Milestones and contract accounting complicate revenue comparisons, including $575.7 million recognized as product sales in 2025 after termination of the Canada supply agreement released previously recorded obligations.
  • Sanofi's regulatory progress and commercial execution affect both milestone timing and royalties, and Novavax excluded Sanofi supply sales, royalties and milestones from its 2026 revenue framework because forecasts were unavailable.
  • Under the Australia supply agreement, up to $92.5 million of deferred revenue may become refundable if regulatory approval and delivery deadlines are missed.
  • Cash and short-term investments of $719 million exceed total debt of $291 million, but negative equity and an operating margin of -56.6% limit the strength suggested by that liquidity.
  • Shares increased 121.4% over the last three years, while stock-based pay totaled $32 million over the last twelve months, making dilution another constraint on results per share.

What to watch next

  • Novavax's raised 2026 framework calls for Adjusted Total Revenue of $235 million to $275 million, excluding Sanofi supply sales, royalties and milestones, so separate disclosure of those categories will clarify the partnership's contribution.
  • Its 2026 combined R&D and SG&A expense guidance is $370 million to $410 million, while the non-GAAP range remains $310 million to $340 million after partner reimbursements.
  • The next Sanofi updates should establish combination trial timing and progress toward manufacturing technology transfer, expected in mid-2027 and linked to a $75 million milestone payment.
  • Novavax also expects its C. difficile vaccine program could enter the clinic as early as 2027, making manufacturing and regulatory progress relevant measures of its internal pipeline.
