The PayPal story
PayPal runs digital wallets and merchant payment processing, with the central question whether steadier branded checkout and growth in Venmo and Braintree can translate into stronger transaction margins.

The story in brief
- Volume outpaces margins. In the quarter to June 2026, payment volume rose 10% to $486.4 billion, but transaction margin dollars increased 1% to $3.9 billion.
- Cash supports repurchases. PayPal generated $1.8 billion of free cash flow and repurchased $1.5 billion of shares in the quarter to June 2026.
- Guidance remains mixed. PayPal raised its full year 2026 non-GAAP earnings guidance to approximately $5.38 per share while still expecting GAAP earnings per share to decline by a mid-single digit percentage.
What drives the business
- PayPal connects consumers and merchants through a global payments network, with 439 million active accounts across approximately 200 markets as of December 31, 2025, and processed $1.79 trillion of payment volume in 2025.
- Its core business earns fees for processing transactions through PayPal and Venmo branded checkout and unbranded merchant services, with transaction revenue accounting for 90% of revenue in the quarter to June 2026.
- The April 2026 reorganization grouped operations into Checkout Solutions & PayPal, Consumer Financial Services & Venmo, and Payment Services & Crypto, combining Braintree, small business processing and crypto capabilities within the latter business.
- The renewed KKR agreement allows purchases of up to €65 billion of eligible European installment loan receivables through March 2028 under an up to €6 billion replenishing commitment, while PayPal retains underwriting and servicing responsibilities.
- Management reported further stabilization in branded checkout and strong momentum in Venmo and Braintree in the quarter to June 2026, when payment transactions increased 8% to 6.8 billion and transactions per active account rose 3% to 60.0 over the trailing twelve months.
What the price assumes
At $54.28, the TenQ reverse DCF implies annual growth of -8.3% in free cash flow after stock pay for ten years, using a 10.2% discount rate.
That implies contraction rather than the 11.7% annual growth delivered over the last 10 years, and sits below the TenQ check's 7.8% bar, which slows that historical record halfway toward 4%.
What could change the story
- Payment growth has not prevented pressure on profitability: GAAP operating margin contracted 171 basis points to 16.4% in the quarter to June 2026, while operating income declined 5% to $1.4 billion.
- Revenue growth of 5.7% over the last twelve months trailed the 6.4% annual pace over the last three years and the TenQ sector benchmark of 17.0%, leaving PayPal short on both acceleration and relative growth checks.
- The near-term liquidity check also falls short at 1.29 against a 1.50 bar, with $13.4 billion of total debt against $11.3 billion of cash and short-term investments.
- PayPal's expanded cybersecurity disclosures identify increasingly sophisticated attacks, including AI-enabled threats against its own and third-party systems, that could expose customer information and disrupt payments.
- Past cybersecurity incidents underscore potential regulatory, litigation and reputational costs, while insurance may not cover all losses and compromised payment card information could create liability to issuing banks.
What to watch next
- For the quarter to September 2026, PayPal expects both GAAP and non-GAAP earnings per share to decline by a low-single digit percentage from the prior year period.
- The next releases will test the raised full year 2026 transaction margin dollar guidance, particularly whether growth improves from 1%, or 3% excluding interest on customer balances, in the quarter to June 2026.
- Branded checkout performance, Venmo and Braintree momentum, and active account growth will show whether the reorganization is strengthening engagement beyond the 0.3% annual account growth reported in the quarter to June 2026.
- Full year 2026 non-GAAP earnings guidance excludes potential transformation-related charges in the second half of 2026, making those costs and their cash effects another measure of execution.
